If you’re on Maui, a drive on the world-famous Hana Highway is a must. This legendary highway is 55 miles long, which doesn’t sound like a lot, but wait until you see it! Then it will make sense why it’s a good idea to let someone else do the driving, so you can just sit back and enjoy the amazing views, which simply must be seen to be believed. The road winds along the coastline, has a total of 617 curves and 26 narrow one-lane bridges, and some of the most breathtaking oceanfront and natural scenery. It leads all the way to the quaint village of Hana on Maui’s eastern shore, where time seems to stand still and the aloha spirit is a way of life.
All along the way, you’ll see many gorgeous waterfalls cascading down steep, green mountains and into crystalline ponds. You’ll get up close views of Maui’s rainforest with its tropical vegetation, such as banana, mango and guava trees. And you’ll drive along secluded coves and beaches, including the 122-acre Wainapanapa State Park, which is home to a beautiful black-sand beach and Hawaiian sea turtles and where your driver will make a stop so you can take some pictures. Not only will you get to see all of these fascinating natural sights, but you’ll also learn more about the region as your guide will add even more color to the scenery with interesting stories and lively narration.
At 2,000 feet above sea level, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of the West Maui Mountains and the Central Valley. Among many other interesting sights, one is the Keanae Lookout, from where you’ll get to see the peninsula and taro fields. Another point of interest is Hookipa, Maui’s famous windsurfing beach. And of course, you’ll visit the famed village of Hana itself, where the old Hawaiian tradition is alive and visitors are welcomed with an open heart. Hana’s beaches are also worth to be seen as they are all so amazingly different. Some are golden, some are white and some are black. Or how about one that is olivine in color?
