This is a great combination tour that will give you an insight into the history of Maui, plus you’ll get to see two of Maui’s most popular natural sights followed by a visit to historic Lahaina town.
Iao Valley is a must-see for every Maui visitor. This verdant, peaceful valley is nestled in between lush green mountains and is simply amazing with its plentiful exotic plants and crystalline natural ponds. You’ll see green as far as your eyes can see! Venture deep into the valley and listen to interesting stories and facts that your tour guide will tell you. You’ll learn about the famous battle that took place here in 1790, when King Kamehameha I defeated the Maui army to unite the Hawaiian Islands.
The valley is also home to a natural wonder, the Iao Needle, a rock pinnacle that rises 2,250 feet out of the earth and into the sky. This green stone pillar has a basaltic core, which has endured eons of swirling water. In ancient times, it was used as a natural altar. Its top is often times hidden behind clouds, which only adds to the mystic atmosphere of this place.
From here, you’ll continue your journey to the historic fishing village of Lahaina, which has once been the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii, from 1820 to 1845. You’ll visit the famous Front Street, which dates back to the 1820s. In the 19th century, Lahaina was a whaling town, where at times up to four hundred whaling ships would anchor. Today, Lahaina is a mecca for shoppers or anyone seeking fun on Maui. For sure you will also see the incredible and very huge banyan tree, which was planted back in 1873. Also, check out the Pioneer Hotel built in 1906 and the historic wharf.
