Find out why Smith’s Luau was named “Best Luau on the Island” by The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook: Kauai Revealed, 5th edition. What’s unique about this luau is its setting. Smith’s Luau is the only luau in Hawaii that is set in a botanical garden. Here you will be surrounded by 30 acres of lush landscapes in the sacred Wailua River Valley, which was once reserved for Hawaiian royalty. Enjoy lagoons teeming with a variety of fish and exotic peacocks and view over 20 types of tropical fruits in their orchard.
After your shell lei greeting, you will have time to stroll through their gardens or take a narrated tram tour. Later on you will witness the traditional imu ceremony, in which the kalua pig is unearthed from the underground oven. Afterward, enjoy a glass of wine, beer or Mai Tai tropical drink at the open bar while the Smith family entertains you with Hawaiian songs.
Then it is time for the pa‘ina, the luau feast. Sample authentic Hawaiian delicacies, such as lomi lomi salmon, fresh poi, kalua pig (from the imu ceremony), teriyaki beef, mahi mahi (island fish), chicken, Hawaiian sweet potato, garden isle greens, island fruits, macaroni salad, namasu salad and mouthwatering tropical desserts.
As the Smith’s say, food may be the heart of a luau, but music is the soul. After the feast, your evening will continue with the "Golden People of Hawaii Festival of Dances" show featuring Hawaiian hula, Tahitian drum dances, traditional dances from New Zealand, China, Japan, the Philippines and the exciting Samoan fire-knife dance. The show takes place in their spacious, torch-lit “Pele Amphitheater,” which even has an erupting volcano!

SMITH FERN GROTTO WAILUA RIVER BOAT TOUR
Arrival at the landing includes a brief nature jaunt through a rain forest of native Hawaiian plants and colorful exotic plants leading up to the lush Fern Grotto. The Fern Grotto is considered a geological wonder that began its formation millions of years ago. Ferns grow upside down from the roof of the grotto. The Wailua River is best-known for being “the only navigable river” in all of the Hawaiian Islands. The river’s fresh water is provided by Mt. Wai‘ale‘ale, famous for being one of the wettest spots on earth.
Smith's notorious Wailua River cruise boats are power-driven with an ingenious rear-engine system invented by Walter Smith himself. The boats are open-air and provide amazing views from all sides during the entire ride upstream. The sacred capital of ancient Kauai and the birthplace of the island’s ali‘i, or royalty are located along the river edges.
Enjoy Songs and Legends of the Wailua River Valley as a part of the Smith Family Tradition. In 1946, Walter Smith, Sr. and his wife, Emily, began the family business as a small rowboat with a borrowed outboard motor. Generations later the Smith Family continues the tradition of sharing the local cultural heritage on the two mile river escapade. Enjoy songs and stories of ancient local Hawaiian culture including sacred Mount Kapu, the King’s Highway, and the First Hau Tree. Guests will also have the opportunity to learn the hula from a lesson taught by a youthful hula dancer. Make sure to share your new talent at the evenings luau feast when you will be able to hop on stage and show off your new moves.
The boat tour takes one hour and 20 minutes round-trip.
