Are you visiting the magnificent Big Island of Hawaii this Winter season? Come to the Kona coast of the Big Island and join us on our vessel the "Pueo Kai" for an afternoon watching the majestic mammals that visit our beautiful Hawaiian Islands each Winter season; the Humpback Whales. Experience up close on the water in our small tour groups these amazing creatures.
Each year Humpback whales migrate from the Northern waters of Alaska, South to the Hawaiian Islands making an annual migration of thousands of miles all on foot, I mean by fin. The Humpback Whales come to the warmer waters during the Winter time to birth their calves and mate. It is quite common that we see baby Humpback Whales swimming with their mothers. One way of finding whales is by sight. Because Humpback Whales are mammals they need air like humans to breath. When the Humpback Whales come to the surface for a breath of air we can see them spout, breach the surface, make tail slaps on the surface of the water, or like dolphins leap out of the water. Another way to find Humpback whales is by audio or using our ears along with the help of hydrophones to hear and listen to whales. Hydrophones are are a microphone put in the water that allows us on the boat to hear the Humpback Whales singing and even Dolphins as they chatter.
Humpback Whales sing. So we know that the Humpback whales are there and we are close when you can hear the whales song. Interesting to know, it is actually only the male Humpback whales that do the singing. The male Humpback Whales sing to attract a mate. Each male has his own unique song that he sings each year. Join us each Winter from December until March for a splendid afternoon experience on the ocean finding, watching, and listening to the majestic mammals; the Humpback Whales.
